DOSSIER 017 / HIDDEN POWER
The Protocols forgery
A fabricated document with a murderous afterlife.

This file begins with a forged document and ends with real harm. The alleged meeting did not furnish the evidence; the printed text manufactured the accusation. Its career shows how exposure can fail to kill a useful lie.
01 / The document that pretended to be minutes
The Protocols purported to reveal a Jewish plan for domination. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum identifies it as an antisemitic forgery, not a recovered transcript. Its reach came through editions, translations, and promoters who sold a vast accusation as inside knowledge. The museum’s collection lets readers examine that material history rather than treating circulation as authentication.
02 / The exposure that readers could check
In 1921, The Times published Philip Graves’s comparison showing that passages had been taken from Maurice Joly’s 1864 political satire, which was not an account of a Jewish conspiracy. The museum preserves evidence of this plagiarism. This is the witness trail that matters: identifiable texts can be compared. A purported insider revelation fails when its supposed secret deliberations turn out to have been borrowed from an earlier literary work.
03 / How promoters defended an exposed forgery
Promoters could retreat from authenticity to the claim that the text somehow expressed a hidden truth anyway. That move changes the subject. A forged set of minutes cannot become evidence of a real meeting simply because a reader already distrusts the people it targets. The museum documents the text’s use in Nazi propaganda. Here the believers’ position is recorded as historical propaganda, without presenting a false accusation against an entire people as a reasonable evidentiary alternative.
04 / The lasting lesson of the paper trail
Notice the mechanism: an unverifiable collective enemy, an apparently confidential document, and a claim large enough to explain any event. The original pages and their borrowed passages are more informative than a debate about whether the accusation feels plausible. Modern repetitions should be traced back to their source. Changing the label on the alleged cabal does not repair a document whose evidentiary foundation has already collapsed.
The allegation, in brief
The text falsely presents itself as minutes of a Jewish plan for world domination.
Where the archive stands
The US Holocaust Memorial Museum traces its fabrication, plagiarism, and use in antisemitic propaganda. It is a forgery, not a leaked blueprint. The record here concerns the manufacture and consequences of the lie.
Some theories leave victims long after the document has been exposed.

A QUESTION LEFT IN THE MARGIN / EDITORIAL PROMPT
Bring one source.
Which part of the documentary trail exposes the forgery, and why did that evidence fail to end its circulation?
A useful first note: the source, what it establishes, and what it leaves open.
