The climate-hoax plot
When the thermometer is cast as an accomplice.

In November 2009, private scientific emails became public ammunition. Readers encountered sharp words, professional disputes and references that looked damning when detached from the work they described.
01 / The email release and the accusation
The controversy around the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit put Phil Jones and colleagues at the centre of allegations that warming evidence had been manipulated. The British parliamentary inquiry heard from witnesses and considered the leaked phrases, access to data and how scientists dealt with requests for information.
The dispute was never just over a graph. It concerned who could inspect the underlying work and whether scientists who felt besieged were entitled to restrict access. Those are legitimate questions even when a broad claim of fabricated global warming goes beyond the evidence.
02 / Read the witnesses rather than the slogan
The inquiry's evidence volume lets readers compare direct submissions instead of accepting one edited email as a complete confession. Jones was defending his practice; critics challenged transparency and the treatment of outsiders. The parliamentary findings said the balance of evidence did not support a systematic attempt to mislead through the much-publicised phrases, while arguing that data, methods and code should be made more accessible.
This is a mixed record, and that makes it useful. Exoneration of one accusation is not a declaration that every practice was admirable. Criticism of disclosure practices is not a finding that warming was invented.
03 / The believer's strongest concern
The hoax argument treats funding incentives, political commitments and control of publication as reasons to suspect coordinated scientific distortion. Incentives can affect institutions and deserve scrutiny. To establish fabrication, however, the argument must show how the proposed coordination accounts for independent measurements and observations, rather than only showing that some participants behaved defensively.
04 / The evidence outside the inbox
The IPCC assessment evaluates human influence through multiple physical lines of evidence, extending far beyond one research group's email archive. Critics of the hoax theory point to that independence: atmospheric, oceanic and land observations must be explained together. Disagreement over a particular temperature reconstruction or policy choice does not erase the wider evidence. The useful debate starts by identifying which measurement is challenged, how it was challenged and whether the alternative explains the rest.
The allegation, in brief
Human-caused warming is portrayed as fabricated research designed to secure money or impose political control.
Where the archive stands
Independent temperature series, ocean heat, ice loss, sea level, and greenhouse physics converge on warming. Arguments over policy do not erase these measurements.
A funding criticism is not a competing explanation for the ocean’s heat.
